I am a fully qualified primary teacher with lots of experience working in schools and mum of two children, aged 18 and 22 plus two little grandchildren. I am 59 and a retired teacher. I support my son who has vision impairment and autism.
I offer individually planned one hour lessons based on The National Curriculum for 3-8 year olds or for older children who need more help going over the basics in a fun and inspiring way.
My lessons are maths or English and often include art and design or science, depending on what the children enjoy doing the most. I put fun before learning so children feel positive about their education.
I like meet up with you and your child in your home to discuss their needs after the introduction fee has been paid to First Tutors and before the first lesson. This session is not counted as a lesson, just a getting to know you chat for free. After that, if you are happy, you can pay for lessons in groups of three at least a week before. Any missed lessons can be changed to a different time. My daughter will be with me to say hi to your child so I can spend lots of time chatting to you about what you want to acheive for him or her.
My maths and English lessons are often planned for children as follows-
Reading and spelling.
Writing activities.
Maths, core areas eg. addition, subtraction, number bonds, division.
Maths, to cover the rest of the curriculum eg. problem solving, shape and space, statistics, as the weeks go on.
Educational reward activity - eg. buying small items of stationary in a "shop" using real money and giving change, making a present for a parent or carer while also introducing a 3D shapes, experimenting with handwriting pens and colours for those who need help with pencil control, experience of fractions and decimals via cutting biscuits or cake.
I can assess your child's progress against The National Curriculum so you know exactly where they are as we go along, although it will take some weeks to get a really good understanding. I have also have lots of experience preparing children for Year 2 SATs.
I am happy to do forty five minute educational play based on the nursery curriculum for toddlers, up to an hour if they are learning and playing happily.
I include lots of arts and crafts in my lessons to help children with applied maths, concentration and study skills, often themed, eg. Christmas, the seasons, favourite books, walks in the woods, nature, weather, the planets.
I often include science in lessons, which is strongly linked to children's interests and helps them to apply maths learning to real life situations to promote the skills needed for future technicians, engineers and in programming, where there is a skills shortage.
I am also a qualified and experienced Careers Advisor and whatever lessons you choose, I will have a sharp eye on your child's future success, just as I do for my own children. My 18 year old son has vision impairment and autism so I am able to support children with disabilities or special needs.
I have worked in education, both as a Primary School Teacher, Tutor and Nursery Nurse. I am a friendly, approachable and positive person and aim for the best possible success for the children I have helped.
I have taught Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. I am a qualified Careers Adviser with five years experience.
I am happy to accept pupils with additional needs.
